The theme of the 2018 symposium is Fashion in the Workplace. Appropriate dressing and expression of style at work has become more complex to women today. What is casual? What is appropriate? What message does my style send regarding moving up in my career? How do I assess the fashion culture in my new workplace if I change jobs or careers?

SPEAKERS

Joanne Arbuckle
Deputy to the President for Industry Partnerships and Collaborative Programs, Fashion Institute of Technology
Fashion Education For Tomorrow and Beyond

As the liaison between the president, the college, and outside organizations, Joanne develops and expands partnerships and collaborations nationally and globally for the college. She works closely with the executive director of the FIT/Infor Design and Tech Lab to integrate the work of the lab with the schools and other divisions of the college. Joanne served as dean of the School of Art and Design for over a decade. As dean, she was responsible for all school operations, departmental development, special programs, fundraising, student enrichment initiatives, and faculty recruitment. Previously she served for five years as assistant chair of FIT’s Fashion Design Department. An industry professional with more than 30 years of experience, Arbuckle worked as a designer and merchandiser before becoming president of the fashion-industry consulting firm Design Integrity. She served for seven years on the nominating committee of the prestigious Earnie Awards in children’s wear. Joanne co-authored the book Historical Dictionary of Fashion and contributed to the Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion.

She earned her Master of Arts in educational administration in higher education from New York University, her Bachelor of Science in fashion design at the State University of New York Empire State College, and her Associate in Applied Science in fashion design at FIT.


Carla Vázquez Jones
Director of Communication, Delpozo
Translating a Fashion House's View for the Workplace

With a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Advertising from the Villanueva University Center (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and a minor in Fashion Communication and Management, Carla’s career has been focused on the luxury industry made in Spain with a strong international presence. She is currently Director of Communication at Delpozo, a fashion brand that has undergone a recent transformation to establish itself in the global market, showing in New York and also at London Fashion Week. Ms. Jones has taught classes related to fashion shows at the University Center of Villanueva and has given lectures in the ELLE master’s degree program at the Complutense University and at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Prior to joining Delpozo, she was with TRIAS, an emerging Spanish brand that showed during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. In 2011 she moved into Loewe’s International Public Relations department. 


Melissa Norden
Executive Director, Bottomless Closet
Women Helping Women Grow in the Professional Life

Prior to her appointment as Executive Director at Bottomless Closet, Melissa worked at The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for 13 years, where she was most recently Senior Vice President, Chief of Staff and General Counsel in the Office of the President. She helped found New Yorkers for Clean Livable and Safe Streets (NYCLASS), a nonprofit dedicated to phasing out New York City carriage horses. Prior to joining the ASPCA, Melissa served as counsel to Madison Square Garden, where she collaborated with the management of the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers and the New York Liberty on the Madison Square Garden Cheering for Children Foundation, raising funds for after-school programs for at-risk urban youth. Melissa received her Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University, where she was named to the Dean’s List with a double major in American History and Spanish. She has been an alumni interviewer for Tufts University for 20 years. She earned her Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School where she was on The Journal of Law and Policy and received numerous awards for academic achievement. Melissa was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2000.

Karen Tai

Alessa Caridi
Founder of JōbuFIT

Alessa Caridi is a certified Pilates Instructor, Functional Fitness Speaker, and founder of JōbuFIT (www.jobufit.com), a workplace wellness program with one goal: creating a fitness movement to solve the “sitting is the new smoking” problem that plagues all busy professionals. Alessa's passion for perfecting her healthy self, fully understanding the wonderful machine that is the human body, and passing along this knowledge to her clients began during her time at University of California, Los Angeles where she obtained her degree in World Arts and Cultures, Dance and Anatomy Concentration. As a local New Yorker, Alessa curates women's health and fitness events in and around the city—her favorite events can be found at the Athleta Flatiron Store. Last Fall, Alessa had the honor of chairing the first extension to Women's Entrepreneurship Day (WED) at the United Nations: Women's Health and Fitness Day.
